Why You Should Always Have a Passport When Traveling
Whether you’re planning your next big vacation or just dreaming of far-off destinations, I want to share something I think every traveler should have in their toolkit—a passport! You might be thinking, “But I’m going on a cruise that doesn’t require a passport” or “I’m not leaving the U.S.!” Trust me, having that little blue book in your hands can make all the difference.
Here’s why I recommend you get your passport (and keep it handy), even when you think you won’t need it.

Emergencies Can Happen (And A Passport Can Save You)
We all hope our trips go smoothly, but what if something unexpected happens? If you’re traveling outside the U.S., even on a closed-loop cruise (starting and ending at the same U.S. port), things can change fast. In a serious medical emergency or other situations where you need to be airlifted back to the U.S., you’ll need a valid passport to re-enter the country.
While cruise lines may not always require passports, in these emergency scenarios, they’re essential. So why risk being stuck in a foreign country waiting for documentation to catch up?
Even Cruises Have Hidden Passport Requirements
You might be surprised to learn that some cruises actually require a passport for land-based excursions. Take Alaskan cruises, for example. Many of the most popular shore excursions, like the White Pass & Yukon Route train or a float trip through the Yukon, cross into Canada. That means you’ll need a passport to participate, even if you boarded the ship in the U.S.
Imagine missing out on these once-in-a-lifetime experiences just because you didn’t bring your passport. Don’t let that happen!
Quick and Easy Access to Apply for Your Passport
If you don’t have your passport yet, don’t worry—it’s easier than you think to get started. You can begin the process by visiting the official U.S. government passport application page. Applying early is key, especially since processing times can vary, and you don’t want your trip delayed by paperwork.
Plan Ahead for Stress-Free Travel
So, here’s my advice: Don’t wait until the last minute to think about your passport. Whether you’re planning a cruise, heading overseas, or just taking an adventure close to home, having a passport ready gives you peace of mind. Plus, it’s an investment in your future travels!
In addition to international travel starting May 7, 2025, all U.S. travelers will need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport, to fly domestically. If you don’t have a Real ID by that date, you won’t be able to board a flight within the U.S. without additional documentation. While a passport can also be used, having your Real ID ensures you’re ready for any last-minute trips without the need for extra paperwork.
I hope this has inspired you to make sure your travel documents are in order. Safe travels, wherever the journey takes you!
