Weathering the Storm: Tips for Enjoying a Rainy Day at Disneyland

Disneyland is known for its magical atmosphere and enchanting experiences, but what happens when the weather doesn’t cooperate? Generally, when you think of Disneyland you think of sunny California.  However, Disneyland gets its fair share of rainy times too.

A rainy day can put a damper on any amusement park visit, but with a little preparation and adaptation, Disneyland can still be a magical experience. In this blog post I will show you our 5 favorite tips for enjoying a wet day at Disneyland.

Bring a Poncho or Raincoat

Wearing a raincoat at Disney can keep you dry.

Being prepared for unexpected weather is essential when visiting any outdoor theme park, even Disneyland. Even though Disneyland is located in California you should come prepared for the unexpected.  On rainy days crowd levels can be much lower.  Packing some lightweight ponchos can help you keep dry and keep going at Disney.

Carry a Compact Umbrella for a Rainy Day at Disneyland

Compact umbrellas at Disneyland can help with rain or provide shade.

Compact umbrellas are lightweight and can fit in the side pocket of a backpack.  Not only are they good for the rain but can help add some needed shade on a hot day too.  Be careful about buying cheap ones.  Strong winds can bend these backwards and then they are useless.  Ask me how I know…

Pack Extra Shoes and Socks

It may seem like a simple thing to do, but always bring an extra pair of shoes on any theme park trip.  If one pair gets wet, then you can switch it out at the hotel at the end of the day.  I would not recommend carrying around an extra pair just because of the weight, but you could carry a lightweight pair of flip flops if you want.

I also recommend bringing a plastic bag with extra socks, in your park bag or backpack, when you go to the parks.  Sometimes even a change of socks at midday will help you feel more comfortable and prevent blisters on your feet. The plastic bag can then be reused to contain your wet socks or other wet clothing you might need to change.

Choose the Best Park for the Weather

A rainy day at Disneyland

When making park reservations for the day look at the weather first.  If it is going to be a rainy day, then choosing Disneyland Park over the Disney California Adventure Park for the day might be your best bet.

Disneyland Park has more indoor attractions than the Disney California Adventure Park.  By choosing Disneyland Park on a rainy day, you will have a better chance of staying dry.  Even though the queues may be outside for the most part, the ride itself is inside so that means less downtime.

Seek out Indoor Attractions

Space Mountain at Disneyland

Attractions such as the Enchanted Tiki Room, The Disney Gallery, and Space Mountain at Disneyland Park are good places to escape the rain for a bit.

At the Disney California Adventure Park, you can take a short break, join a class, or meet Anna and Elsa inside the Disney Animation building.

Meet Elsa at the Disney Animation buidling.

Another fun thing to enjoy indoors is Mickey’s PhilharMagic.  You can sit back and relax in the dry theater while enjoying a 12 min. 3D movie starring Donald Duck.  Mickey’s PhilharMagic is found in Hollywood Land at the Disney California Adventure Park.

Pin trading on a rainy day at Disneyland

You can also use a rainy day to browse the shops, get a bite to eat, or try some pin trading. Our favorite shops at Disneyland include Port Royal Curios and Curiosities and Pieces of Eight.  Port Royal carries merchandise exclusive to the Haunted Mansion and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Pieces of Eight features treasures to be popular for any pirate.  If you like pin trading and Disney trivia Pieces of Eight is the shop for you.   Ask the cast member at the register if they are doing trivia that day and you might just win a mystery pin.

Final Thoughts

While rainy days at Disneyland may not be the most ideal situation, they can still be enjoyed with a little preparation and flexibility. By bringing the right gear, choosing the best park, and seeking out indoor attractions and entertainment, visitors can still have a magical time despite the weather. And who knows, you may even discover a new favorite way to experience the park in the rain.
