From essential clothing items to must-have electronics, this guide will help you pack your bags with ease. Whether you’re a cruise novice or a seasoned traveler, this guide has all the tips and tricks you need to make sure your Alaskan cruise is a success.

Essential documents for the voyage

Essential documents such as a passport, insurance documents, and visas should be gathered and stored in a safe place. The in-cabin safe is a great place to keep documents safe while cruising.

Closed loop cruises originating and ending in the US can often only require a birth certificate and matching photo ID (for US citizens), but a valid passport is always suggested for out of the country travel.  You never know what will happen and if you will need to fly back into the country and that will require a passport.  Always check the US Dept. of State travel page before you go to insure you have the most up to date travel requirements.

Appropriate clothing for the climate

Depending on your destination, it is wise to pack appropriate clothing for the climate. If you are traveling to a hot climate, light and breathable clothing is key. If you are traveling to a cold climate, then make sure to bring a sweater, coat, and warm layers.

I suggest always dressing in layers for Alaska.  You might start out cold in the morning, but then will get very warm if enjoying a hiking excursion.  You will also be colder on a day viewing the glaciers.  I suggest a warm hat and gloves for these days.

I also like to pack a water-resistant jacket and a travel umbrella for Alaska.  You never know what the weather will be like.  Juneau is known for often being one of the colder, rainier ports and you might want to be prepared.

Footwear for an Alaskan Cruise

Comfortable and waterproof footwear is also a must. You will be doing a lot of walking and it’s important to have sturdy, weatherproof shoes in order to tackle any terrain. Because Alaska is in a rainforest climate paths are often slick and wet so be sure and bring shoes that have good tread.

Electronics and accessories for entertainment

Electronics and accessories such as a camera and phone charger will come in handy for entertainment, as well as navigation and communication. Alaska is one of the most beautiful locations to photograph.  A nice zoom lens is recommended for whale watching and wildlife.

Be sure and download the app for the cruise line you are travelling on.  It is full of useful information such as the daily schedule, planned activities and excursions, and specialty dining times.

Necessary toiletries and personal items

Finally, don’t forget to bring the necessary toiletries and personal items for your trip including a carry-on bag with medications and necessary items you might need for the first day.  Luggage can often take a while to arrive to your room on the first night.  Therefore, I always suggest packing a small carry-on bag such as a large purse or backpack

One thing that you might need for Alaska, that you won’t need on other cruises, is mosquito repellent.  Since the climate in Alaska is wet and is a rainforest environment if you are going on any kind of a hiking or forest excursion you will want to pack this.
