If you have ever been on a flight, you know it is exciting for the first hour or so, then you get over it and start thinking “Are we there yet?”  If you have children, you REALLY know this.

Ways to keep the kids, and yourself, entertained on a flight don’t have to always be high tech.  Here are some of our favorite ways to pass time on a long flight and still enjoy your trip.

Read a Book

Reading allows you to get lost in a different time and place.  It is a great way to relax and unwind on a long flight.  If your kids are too little to read, bring a picture book and let them make up a story to tell you, or you can just simply read to them.

These printable travel themed bookmarks can help you mark your place if you need a break from reading on the plane.

Blank Paper

Yes… You read that right.  Blank paper is used for so many things and is a great way to pass the time on a long flight.

One of Morgan’s favorite things to do on a plane is have art/drawing contests with us.  One person picks a topic and then both people must do their best to draw it.  The person that draws it the best wins.

You can also play other games with blank paper such as Win, Lose, or Draw, paperfolding origami, tic tac toe, hangman, or the box game.  The possibilities with blank paper are endless.  Pick up a small notebook and a pen and you are ready to go.

Activity Books

Activity books can keep kids, and adults, for hours on plane rides.  One of our favorite activity books is 100 Things to Do on a Plane.  This book is full of word games, puzzles, and coloring activities.

Word searches and crossword puzzle books are some other activity books that are great for adults and kids.  You can even download digital ones on your phone to have less stuff to pack.

Movies

Some long flights offer in flight movies that you can enjoy, or you can download one on a tablet or your phone and watch from there.  I do suggest that you bring your own headphones or earphones with a cord.  Many airlines don’t offer them for free anymore and they might not be the right size for little ones.

Sleep

My favorite way to pass time on a long flight is sleep.  I always carry an inflatable travel pillow on flights.  It collapses and folds up to a nice size that easily fits in your carry-on bag or personal item.  You don’t have to worry about it being to big and bulky.
