Giving Back While Traveling This Holiday Season

The holidays are a season of giving, and what better way to make an impact than by giving back while you travel? Voluntourism—a blend of volunteering and tourism—is a meaningful way to create memories while making a difference. From volunteering at family-focused organizations to participating in eco-friendly geocaching events, here’s how you can combine travel with giving back this holiday season.

Volunteer at Give Kids the World Village

One of the most rewarding opportunities to give back is by volunteering at Give Kids the World Village in Kissimmee, Florida. This nonprofit resort provides cost-free, weeklong vacations for critically ill children and their families. The village comes to life during the holidays with festive lights, themed parties, and plenty of ways for volunteers to spread joy.

With over 90% of the organization powered by volunteers, you can contribute to activities like serving meals in Café Clayton, assisting with the nightly Halloween extravaganza, or creating magical moments during Christmas celebrations. Whether you’re traveling solo or with your family, volunteering at Give Kids the World Village will leave you inspired and grateful.

Participate in Cache In Trash Out Events

If you’re a geocaching enthusiast, consider participating in Cache In Trash Out (CITO) events during your travels. These events focus on cleaning up parks, beaches, and trails while engaging in the thrill of geocaching.

CITO is a fantastic way to explore new destinations while protecting the environment. Not only will you be part of a global movement, but you’ll also leave each place better than you found it. As a long-time geocacher, I’ve found that these events create a sense of community and purpose, whether you’re in a local park or a faraway forest.

Find Local Volunteer Opportunities

Beyond Give Kids the World Village, there are countless opportunities to give back while traveling:

  • Food Banks and Shelters: Many cities welcome short-term volunteers to serve meals or assist with holiday gift programs.
  • Fun Runs and Walk for a Cause: Many cruise lines sponsor these types of events on board their ships or on their private islands.
  • Community Cleanups: Check local events for beach, park, or city cleanup projects.

Before traveling, research organizations in your destination that align with your passions and schedule. Many nonprofits appreciate even a few hours of your time.

Shop with Purpose

Another way to give back is by supporting local businesses and artisans. Choose souvenirs or gifts crafted by local communities, helping sustain their economy during the holiday season.

On average, vacationers allocate between $50 and $200 for souvenirs during their trips. This goes a long way for a local small business owner.

One of our favorite souvenirs to purchase on vacation is a Christmas ornament. As a result, we have an entire travel-themed tree in our house.  We also enjoy purchasing local art when on vacation and whenever we see it displayed throughout our house we are reminded of that trip.

Another of our favorite souvenirs purchased on vacation is a Fahlo bracelet which can be seen here. A portion of each bracelet purchase goes to help protect the Sea Turtles.

As you plan your holiday adventures, consider how you can make a positive impact on the places and people you visit. Volunteering, participating in environmental cleanup efforts, or shopping consciously can turn your trip into a memorable and meaningful experience.
