Enjoying Local Festivals While Travelling
Often you will get lucky to happen upon a local festival while travelling, or maybe you even plan your travel around being on vacation in a specific location during a local festival or event. Local festivals are known for their food, shopping, special events and entertainment, and kids activities. Whatever the case, it is fun to see what the local festival has in store. You never know what treasures you may unearth or memories you will make here.
One of my bucket list local events is at the Honolulu Swap Meet. It is open every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday and has over 400 vendors. This is a great place to purchase unique items with island flair. If you are visiting here soon plan a trip here and bring back some great souvenirs at a great price.
Festival Food
My absolute favorite part of any local festival is the FOOD! Any one who knows me knows how much I LOVE food truck food! Anything fried is good right?? My favorite things to order are fried cheese curds and funnel cakes. I mean deep fried cheesy goodness? Sugar overload? What can be bad about that?
Shopping at Local Festivals
My second favorite thing to do at any festival is shop. Local artisans and home based businesses set up shop at these events. There is always some kind of treasure to discover. I love buying all natural products like hand-made soaps and lotions, garden and seasonal decor, and food mixes like soups and dips.
Another unique thing you will find when shopping is trendy, boutique clothing. Festivals often have one of a kind clothing that can only be found when shopping with a home based business. You won’t have to look like everyone else if you shop small and local.
Special Events and Entertainment
One of the big draws to any local festival is special events and live entertainment. I went to two festivals this weekend. One had an antique car show set up which was very cool to see, and the other had local musicians playing on the street. Both types of entertainment are equally enjoyable, but each adds in a little something extra special to the festival itself.
Events usually will follow the theme of the festival. This weekend we attended an Earth Day Festival. The US Forestry Department was there giving out free pine trees and they also had meet and greets with Smokey the Bear. Smokey was a hit with everyone.
Kids Activities at Local Festivals
Often local festivals will have special activities for the kids to enjoy. Kids become bored easily while walking around in the heat when watching adults shop. Face painting, games, and crafts can be fun things for the little ones to enjoy and not feel left out. At the Earth Day Festival they had rock painting, bird feeder making, and plant potting.
At the Heritage Market this weekend, the Young Living booth has a DIY roller bottle activity that is safe for older kids as well as adults to enjoy.
Final Thoughts
Local festivals are lots of fun and are unique in the food, shopping, special events and entertainment, and kids activities that they contain. When you plan your next trip go online to find out what is happening in the town you will be visiting.
