This month marks a special milestone for us as we celebrate our 20th anniversary as geocaching members! Since joining the geocaching community in 2005, we’ve embarked on countless adventures, discovered hidden treasures, and explored breathtaking landscapes together.

From our first find, each experience has deepened our love for the outdoors and brought us closer as a family. Here’s to many more years of adventure, exploration, and making memories as geocachers!

One of our first to-find caches occurred in Canada.  So far, we have geocached in 4 countries and 6 states including Alaska and Hawaii.  Our favorite caches include puzzles with multiple steps to find the actual cache container.  We also love finding and hiding travel bugs.  We have had one traveling since 2017 and has travelled over 30,000 miles!

What Is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunt. Participants use the Geocaching app on their smartphone to navigate to hidden containers, called “geocaches.” These caches can range in size from small (like a film canister) to large (like an ammo box). They are hidden in locations as diverse as city parks, scenic trails, or even urban landmarks. Inside the geocache, you’ll usually find a logbook to sign and sometimes small trinkets to exchange.

Free Fun for Everyone

The basic version of the Geocaching app is free, making it an affordable adventure for families and travelers. With the free plan, you can access many caches in your area, view their difficulty levels, and even track your finds.

For those who want more features, like access to premium caches and offline maps, there’s an option to upgrade—but for beginners, the free version offers plenty of fun.

Premium Membership Benefits: Unlock Even More Adventure

For those who are serious about geocaching or simply want to enhance their experience, try upgrading to the Premium membership. At just $29.99 per year, the Premium plan offers a range of benefits that take your geocaching to the next level:

  • Access to Premium Caches: Premium members get exclusive access to more difficult or hidden caches. These premium caches often provide an extra layer of challenge, making them a fun addition for seasoned geocachers.
  • Offline Maps: With Premium, you can download geocaching maps and details to use offline. This is perfect for those adventures in remote areas without cell service. This means you can keep exploring no matter where your travels take you.
  • Advanced Search Filters: Premium members can narrow down cache searches with advanced filters, such as difficulty level, terrain, size, and more. This makes it easier to find caches that suit your preferred level of adventure.
  • Create Lists and Track Favorites: Premium members can create custom lists of caches they want to find. Try saving places you want to explore, helping you stay organized for future adventures. Plus, you can see which caches have been marked as “favorites” by other users, leading you to some of the most beloved and unique caches.
  • Better Geocaching Tools: Premium membership gives you access to advanced tools like “Pocket Queries,” which help you plan trips by sending you up to 1,000 geocaches that meet your criteria. This feature is especially useful for organizing cache hunts in specific locations or along a planned travel route.

For just $29.99 a year, Premium membership is a great investment for those who love geocaching and want to unlock even more opportunities for exploration.

Family-Friendly Adventure

Geocaching is perfect for families because it turns an ordinary outing into a treasure hunt. Whether you’re hiking through the woods, exploring a new city, or just enjoying a day at your local park, geocaching adds an extra layer of excitement. Kids love the idea of hunting for hidden treasure, and it’s a great way to encourage outdoor activity and problem-solving. Plus, many caches are hidden in locations that are accessible and safe for children, making it an ideal family bonding experience.

Explore the World Through Earth Caches

One unique aspect of geocaching is the Earth Cache. These special types of caches don’t involve a hidden container but instead focus on teaching geocachers about a geological feature of the Earth. Earth Caches can be found at locations of natural beauty or scientific interest, and they’re a great way to learn something new while traveling. From stunning rock formations to volcanic landscapes, these caches offer both an educational and awe-inspiring experience.

Cache In, Trash Out (CITO)

Another aspect of geocaching is its commitment to environmental stewardship through Cache In Trash Out (CITO) events. These are organized clean-up events where geocachers come together to pick up trash, remove invasive species, and take care of the areas they love to explore. Participating in a CITO event is a great way to give back to the community and the environment while enjoying the adventure of geocaching.

Global Geocaching Opportunities

Wherever your travels take you, there’s a good chance you’ll find geocaches along the way. With millions of caches hidden worldwide, geocaching gives you a reason to explore new places. Whether you’re hiking in the mountains, wandering through city streets on your Mukkpet ebike, or lounging on a beach, geocaches can be found just about anywhere. Plus, the app makes it easy to track your finds, get hints, and even log your adventures for others to see.
