If you’re traveling outside the U.S., even on a closed-loop cruise (starting and ending at the same U.S. port), things can change fast. In a serious medical emergency or other situations where you need to be airlifted back to the U.S., you’ll need a valid passport to re-enter the country.
While cruise lines may not always require passports, in these emergency scenarios, they’re essential. So why risk being stuck in a foreign country waiting for documentation to catch up?
Even Cruises Have Hidden Passport Requirements
You might be surprised to learn that some cruises actually require a passport for land-based excursions. Take Alaskan cruises, for example. Many of the most popular shore excursions, like the White Pass & Yukon Route train or a float trip through the Yukon, cross into Canada. So, here’s my advice: Don’t wait until the last minute to think about your passport. Whether you’re planning a cruise, heading overseas, or just taking an adventure close to home, having a passport ready gives you peace of mind. Plus, it’s an investment in your future travels!
In addition to international travel starting May 7, 2025, all U.S. travelers will need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport, to fly domestically. If you don’t have a Real ID by that date, you won’t be able to board a flight within the U.S. without additional documentation. While a passport can also be used, having your Real ID ensures you’re ready for any last-minute trips without the need for extra paperwork.
