Cooking Our Way Across the USA
Cooking has become an integral part of American culture, with each state boasting its own unique flavors and recipes. This skill is learned and enhanced through practice, making it a perfect pastime for summer when there is more time to experiment with new recipes. In fact, cooking is found to have therapeutic benefits, reducing stress and promoting mindfulness.
At the end of school, our school librarian came across the 1976 book The Kids’ 50 State Cookbook by Aileen Paul. This summer we have been challenged to cook our way across the USA.

Why Cook?
To embark on a culinary journey across the 50 states, begin by exploring the recipes listed in the cookbook. The book features simple yet delicious old-fashioned favorites from each state, making it easy for children to try their hand at cooking with minimal supervision. By going through the recipes alphabetically, one can keep track of their progress and make the most of this fun and educational summer activity. With a bit of creativity and an adventurous spirit, cooking can be a great way to bond with family and friends and explore the diverse culinary landscape of the United States.
Each state has at least two recipes listed and you can pick your favorite based on your home ingredients. However, some recipes include obscure ingredients such as Nasturtium leaves (Oklahoma), but others shouldn’t be hard to find.
Final Thoughts
Cooking and eating are two of America’s favorite pastimes. When you are unable to travel a staycation can be just as enjoyable as spending money on a large vacation. Cooking your way across the USA can help bring you a sense of travel. You also will enjoy family time right from your own home.
We hope you enjoy following along with us as we cook our way across the USA. Do you have a favorite recipe from your home state? Let us know in the comments below. Remember… Life’s Short… Take the Trip!
