Researching budget-friendly destinations
Researching budget-friendly destinations involves looking for places that offer affordable accommodations, transportation, and activities, while still providing a memorable travel experience. One of the easiest ways to do this is by using online travel resources, such as travel blogs and review sites, to compare prices and find deals.
I always suggest working with a travel agent. Travel agents research destinations constantly either by travelling or training on multiple destinations. Therefore, a travel agent is always your best source for research. We get paid to do the research for you so you can just sit back and enjoy your trip.
Traveling during off-peak seasons for savings
Off-peak seasons refer to times of the year when fewer people are traveling to a particular destination. These periods vary depending on the location and the type of trip you have in mind. For example, in tropical destinations, off-peak seasons usually coincide with the rainy season, while in ski resorts, it’s typically the warmer months. By researching your intended destination, you can identify the months where prices are generally lower, and crowds are thinner.
Be aware when doing this though, planning an affordable family vacation during off-peak times is not always the smartest move. Travelling to Florida during hurricane season or Alaska during the winter is probably not in your best interest. On the other hand, cruising to Mexico during Thanksgiving break can be less crowded and budget friendly. Other off-peak times for cruising to the Caribbean include January and February. Due to hurricane season, I do not recommend cruising to the Caribbean or the Bahamas in September and early October.
Choosing accommodations with kitchenettes for meal prep
One popular accommodation option for family travel is staying in a room with a way to cook your own meals. Choosing a condo at the beach versus a hotel room is a great way to save money by cooking in your room.
Theme Park resorts such as Disney and Universal Orlando offer family suites with kitchenettes so you can bring in your own food and prep your own meals. This helps when planning an affordable family vacation, by saving money on not eating out, you can have more fun in the parks without breaking the bank.Â
Another way to save money even in a hotel room, is by bringing a crock pot. You can plug it in any room and have a meal ready when you get back from a long day at a theme park or the beach. You will just have to make a grocery stop when you reach your destination, and make sure the room you book has a small refrigerator. Don’t forget to pack the crock pot liners for an easy clean up.
Taking advantage of free activities and events
One way to find free events is to check your local community calendar or newspaper. Often, cities and towns will host free events throughout the year, such as outdoor movie screenings, festivals, and concerts. Additionally, many libraries and community centers offer free classes and workshops, which can be an excellent way to learn a new skill or hobby. State Parks are another great way to see a destination for free.
If you want to see the world on a budget, try out a cruise. Cruising is an all-inclusive way to travel that makes for a very affordable family vacation. Cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean often offer special promotions for families, such as Kids Sail Free, during off-peak season times.Â
Promotions such as these are perfect for homeschool families because they often occur during the traditional school year. Homeschool families tend to have more flexibility in their schedules than families with kids in public schools.
Setting a vacation budget and sticking to it
You should not have to sacrifice having fun for the sake of sticking to a budget, however, you do not want to go into debt because of one vacation either. Your budget needs to be flexible and realistic in the beginning planning stages while you do research.
For example, you do not need to set a budget of $500 per person for an Alaskan cruise, in June, including airfare. This trip simply does not exist. This is where you should do research on your affordable family vacation destination first to determine what a reasonable budget should look like.
A reasonable budget should include everything and allow for extra expenses such as parking fees, hotel cleaning fees, emergencies, etc. One such budget should look like this:
Airfare: $1000
Hotel (3 nights): $500
Food: $500
Souvenirs: $300
Activities: $500
Misc. travel expenses (gas, parking, fees, etc.): $200
Total: $3000
*It is important to estimate food and souvenirs as an expense and stick to the budget. These are two areas that you have control over and can easily get out of hand once you are enjoying your destination.
