21 State Parks in 2021 – Part 6
Mount Nebo State Park is best known for its’ hiking and biking trails, breathtaking views, and camping facilities. The park sits on top of the 1,350 ft. Mount Nebo. It has 14 miles of hiking and biking trails, a playground and picnic area, cabins, campsites, tennis courts, and a swimming pool. This is our #6 park in the 21 State Parks in 2021 Challenge.
Located in Dardanelle, AR, this park is popular for hiking and biking. It also has the first ever rental cabin in an Arkansas State Park. Weddings are popular at this park due to the scenic background.
Many of the park structures and trails were built by the CCC in the 1930s.
State Park Hiking Trails
This park has many hiking trails with breathtaking views. Today we took the Rim trail which was suggested by the park ranger as being one of their most popular trails.
Rim Trail
If you are afraid of heights, like me, then you might want to try a different trail. The name of this trail says it all. Yes, you will be on the outer rim of the mountain. Some spots are narrow, and you will want to hold on to your children.
However, I think Morgan did better than I did, and I was glad that Daniel, not Mimmie, came along for this one. I thought I was going to fall to my death upon several occasions, and when we went the wrong way at Sunrise Point, I called it quits and decided to walk back through the park to the playground.
No, we did not finish the whole trail. Enough is enough and I know when to quit. Plus, Morgan was dying to go to the playground, so we did.
We were surprised to see mountain bikers riding down onto this trail. They definitely have more guts than me. It made me nervous just watching them go down the steep slopes onto the start of the trail.
If breathtaking views are what you are looking for, then this is the trail for you. You can’t beat the beauty that you will see here.
Camping and picnicking
This park has a great camping area and beautiful cabins. It has a large outdoor swimming area and an excellent playground for the kids. Several tent camping areas surround the playground area so you will be able to camp close and keep an eye on your kids at the same time.
Morgan loved playing with other kids on the merry go round and climbing on the play structure.
Final Thoughts for Mount Nebo State Park
This park is a good one if you are into hiking and mountain biking. If you are deathly afraid of heights, then maybe you should skip this one. The road is very winding and has several switchbacks.
This is not one I really plan to go back to, but who knows there are many areas of this one we left undiscovered. It looks like a genuinely nice area for camping due to the large swimming pool, scenic views, and great playground for the kids.
