21 State Parks in 2021- Part 20
Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park is home to the largest mound site in Arkansas. It is currently a live archeological site where you can come and see research and excavations at work. This site was a ceremonial ground for prehistoric Native Americans. Artifacts found in this area can be seen on display in the visitor center. There is a trail that actually allows you to walk close to the mound site and during certain times of the year you can even enjoy a guided tour by the park staff on one of the mounds.
#20 Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park
The Visitor Center at Toltec Mounds
Inside the interactive visitor center, you can find the history of the mounds as well as artifacts, fossils, and local history. There are animal furs to look at and touch, and a replica of an archeological dig site to see. We enjoyed looking at the various fossils on display. The visitor center offers interpretive programs year-round.
Trails at Toltec Mounds
Two trails go around the mounds site. The Knapp trail is fully accessible and will take you up close to the three main mounds on the site. The Plum Bayou trail is a grassy trail that goes around the perimeter of the mound site. Both trails connect to a boardwalk that extends over the waterway known as Mound Lake. In the bayou you can see giant trees that are native to the area. Canoes and Kayaks are available for rent inside the visitor center.
The visitor center also has a general trail guide and a children’s trail guide available to take with you on your self-guided trek. Be sure to pick one up before you set out. The trails are marked with informational markers to tell the story of the mounds.
